Take Action Today on Regional Planning Councils!

Tomorrow (March 25) at 10:00 AM, the House Economic Development and Tourism Subcommittee will be debating and voting on a comprehensive growth management committee bill that will include the language from Senator Wilton Simpsons “strike-all” amendment that completely changed his original bill to eliminate Regional Planning Councils.

The new Regional Planning Council bill by Senator Simpson not only does not eliminate Regional Planning Councils, but Senator Simpson guarantees $2.5 million for Regional Planning Councils for this next year’s budget. The House Economic Development and Tourism Subcommittee will take up PCS for HB 933 which is a proposed committee substitute that will include several filed growth management bills into one bill and includes Senator Simpson’s strike-all language.

Fortunately, Representative Debbie Mayfield is still fighting for us and has added language that will allow Counties to opt-out of Regional Planning Councils. Under Florida law, all Florida Counties must be a member of a Regional Planning Council and are required to pay dues that come out of your taxes. This opt-out clause will allow Counties to make the decision if they feel they are receiving appropriate benefits to justify the money they must pay. This will restore local “home rule” control.

Please make phone calls and e-mails to the members of the House Economic Development and Tourism Subcommittee before this Wednesday (March 25)
Tell them to support the opt-out language in PCS for HB 933 to allow Counties to opt-out of Regional Planning Councils. This opt-out clause will allow Counties to make the decision if they feel they are receiving appropriate benefits to justify the tax-payer money they must pay. This will restore local “home rule” control.
