In the 7th century, Mohammed told people that he had seen the angel Gabriel. Gabriel said that he- that is Mohammed- was to instruct the people that there was one God. At first, the people {properly} denounced Mohammed as a "mad-man". But within eight short years, an entire city would surrender to his teachings---
at the point of a sword.
