Dear Mr. Van Riper:  

Thank you for contacting me to express your opinion regarding gun control issues. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me on this matter.

Our hearts go out to all victims of gun violence and particularly the victims of the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. I was deeply saddened by the many lives lost and was outraged at the actions of the shooter. This cowardly and callous act was the work of an individual with no regard for the sanctity of human life. Such a horrible display of violence had a deep and devastating impact on families and communities across the nation. Our country will never forget the innocent children and the brave teachers who tried to protect them.  

 In light of the recent tragedies, I believe that everyone, including Congress, has a role to play in preventing other such events. However, any discussion on gun control must begin with the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution.  I have always been a strong, consistent supporter of the Second Amendment and I firmly believe our Second Amendment rights must be preserved and protected.  

I believe that the gun debate in America must focus on enforcing existing laws, reforming our mental health laws, and addressing the culture of violence in this nation.  Any reasonable reforms and proposals set forward should be thoroughly considered and weighed by Congress.  Please know that as this dialogue continues, I will keep your views and thoughts in mind.
