President Barack Obama has consistently said the reason he did not leave troops in Iraq is because the Iraqi government would not sign a status of forces agreement to provide for legal protection for U.S. troops stationed in the Middle East country.
Kelly ventured back Thursday to the 2012 presidential election to play a clip of Obama admitting during a debate with GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney that he did not want to leave troops behind.
“In regards to Iraq, you and I agreed, I believe that there should have been a status of forces agreement…,” Romney said, before being interrupted by the president. “Oh, you didn’t want a status of forces agreement?”
“No, what I would not have done was left 10,000 troops in Iraq that would tie us down,” Obama replied. “That certainly would not help us in the Middle East.”
“There it is!” Kelly said emphatically.
When Kelly turned to Psaki, she was dumbfounded as to how to respond. After a moment of awkward silence, she fell back on the talking points she had been repeating throughout the interview, ignoring the clip altogether.
