Crenshaw: Representative Sandy Adams (R-FL) introduced H.R. 973; prohibits any federally authorized court from using foreign law

This letter to one of the Arlington Group's members is quite interesting as it contains information about a bill quite similiar to the one our state government refused to pass before adjourning for the year (Muslims went up in arms about it as I recall because they thought it was against Sharia law being used .......  a mute point actually because imposing a decision in a US courtroom based on Sharia law is already against the law).  Anyway, the federal government will enact something just in case one of the Obama appointed judges decides to go rouge, as many of them have, and fail to follow the law.

Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns regarding Sharia Law in America. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on this important matter.
 
As you are aware,  Sharia Law is the religious law of Islam. Islamic faith tradition in some form is currently in use as a civil code in many Muslim nations including Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Malaysia, Pakistan, and others.  Sharia Law is believed by adherents to represent a divine system of governance.  In the United States our Constitution is the supreme law of the land and the judges in every state are bound by it.  
America is not in danger of adopting any part of Sharia Law. The supremacy of our Constitution prohibits our government from enforcing foreign or religious law on the American people.  America is the oldest and strongest Constitutional Republic in the world with the longest standing written Constitution.  Our own legal tradition bars the introduction of Sharia law, and our institutions are robust in their capability to ensure that such an infringement on the liberty of the American people does not take place.  While we are a society with devotion to religious tolerance, welcoming people of all faiths, including Islam, we are all equal before the laws of the United States in accordance with our Constitution. 
On March 9, 2011, Representative Sandy Adams (R-FL) introduced H.R. 973, which would prohibit any federally authorized court from using foreign law in its considerations regardless of the source of the foreign law.  It is imperative that cases before American courts be determined using American law, which has been enacted by the representatives of the American people.  
H.R. 973 has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. While I do not serve on this committee, rest assured, I will keep your views and thoughts in mind should this legislation come to the House Floor for consideration.
