Our outgoing Mayor has proposed to the tune of over $6 million of our tax dollars that we the taxpayers buy Everbank's relocation of 800 employees to one of Downtown's vacant highrises. The funds of which $2.75 million goes directly into Everbank's hands to pay for quote "leasing costs" come from JEDC. When JEDC was founded, (1996 I believe) it was specifically stated that these funds would not be used to attract companies to relocate from one section of Jacksonville to another. I work specifically in this arena, I represent tenants looking for office space and I represent building owners and their space and I have never heard of a City doing something like this for an existing tenant . Everbank will come from the I-95/Butler Corridor to Downtown Jacksonville at the expense of their landlord in the suburbs. Would Everbank do this without the money, who knows? They certainly have enough money of their own to do this without this handout.

Another $3.25 million dollars is to build a parking garage so Everbank can park presumably for free. Is this Toney Sleiman's garage? It is not, it is another concession to Everbank. Who will this benefit? Of course Everbank, but who else? First Coast News interviewed a hot dog vendor who said (I paraphrase) "it will be good for my business but I don't think taxpayer dollars should be used." This is a private business deal between landlord and a potential new tenant, no interference is necessary from Government and the Government is damaging the existing landlord by putting this "backroom" deal together.

We invite you to join our discussion on this subject already in progress on "Just Speak Up" heard Mon.-Fri. on AM600 WBOB at 12 o'clock Noon. Any of our Councilmen who are listening are invited to participate in the discussion also, that number is 904-854-1320. Please get involved on this one, let's hold the outgoing Mayor responsible and pray our City Councilmen will make the right decision.

Fiunally JEDC takes up this subject for the first time on June 9th at Jacksonville's City Hall Suite 400 at 9 AM. I'll be there will you?

Room 400 in City Hall is Mayor's Conferenc Room.  It's not very big. First number is floor number.

I have not been Ed Ball Bldg since remodeling but number is similar so would be eigth floor and possibly larger.

I didn't know about the room change!

There is only myself and one or two possibly beside myself from CTDC but the other sure CTDC member is Connie, one of the research people, the "fire ball" that Patricia mentioned.

One or both of us will have some sheets with info from the COJ Website to share.

Some response from some City Council Members but not great help really.

We will need to communicate with them befor the CC Meeting Tuesday.

SEEYA THERE!

Chuck, thanks for giving us the final vote date, so now we all know they're rushing to get this political backroom deal finalized just two days before the new Mayor and City Council members take office. This is an astonishing example of political games being played to accomplish last-minute backdoor county legislating to fleece the public and pad the bank accounts of private businesses, including the Weavers/Jaguars sports franchise, with taxpayers' money. This is unconscionable.

If they follow through, pass all of this just two days before the end of Mayor Peyton's, Council President Jack Webb's, and out-going Council members' terms of office, without providing us their statutory and constitutional authority for forcing taxpayers to subsidize private businesses---and Mayor Peyton signs it all into law within those last two days of his term, we need to file a formal Complaint with Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, and request a full investigation of all of it and a legal opinion on the statutory authority and/or constitutional authority of the City of Jacksonville/Duval County to force taxpayers to subsidize private businesses that serve no necessary or legitimate government functions, operations, or services.

We could also file a Complaint and request an investigation by the U.S. Attorney, to be conducted by the Public Corruption Unit, as well as file ethics complaints with both the County and the State of Florida.

Ouch.  You know we have a friend with the same name that uses Chuck too and doesn't like to be called by the "other" name :).   Sorry.  I will try to remember!

Do you suppose we could do comments long enough to foil their plans to ram this through????   Probably shouldn't write that here, but was just wondering.

Unless suite 400 at City Hall is the very large meeting room on first floor in which the public City Council meetings are held, I have no idea how big suite 400 is, so wouldn't have any frame of reference as to size of CR 851. We need to know how many public attendees can be accommodated in CR 851 before we go down there and find that there's no room for all of us. We should probably go anyway and take advantage of any media opportunity to express our views, particularly if we're left standing outside.

It's most unusual for a publicly-announced meeting to be changed to a different location just one day before the scheduled meeting, necessarily making people late to the meeting, when public comments are usually among the first items on the agenda.
Comment by Charles D White on June 8, 2011 at 1:58pm

Patricia, please call me Chuck and at this point I don't think it matters what their reasoning is for changing locations, they know they've got a fight on their hands and expect this to be a rubber stamp tomorrow. The first fight is to see if they can get it to the June 28th Council meeting for a final vote.

I meant the JEDC should not be changing addresses less than 24 hours before the meeting.........and not you Charles.  I appreciate you keeping us on top of this!

Comment by Patricia M. McBride on June 8, 2011 at 1:53pm

Charles, I fear there will be people who found out about this at the old address and won't see the new info or find out about it.  In that instance, I agree with J.R. because they might not find the meeting at all.  This should have been decided on and posted.  There should not be an address change less than 24 hours before the meeting and nothing in the paper about this at all (of course, the TU is all in agreement to anything these people want to spend money on).

This is beginning to look as if the plotters and planners for this raw deal for taxpayers are deliberately trying to run and hide from us the details of what they've been planning, plotting, and agreeing to do... in secret and behind our backs... in order to ram it through before July 1, 2011, when the Mayor and some City Council members will be out of office. This is totally unacceptable and we need to find out exactly who is responsible, blow their cover, and hold them and their unethical actions up for public scrutiny. They don't have any right to frustrate the participation of Duval County citizens and taxpayers in governmental processes that will directly affect them and their finances and are required to be carried out in conformance with Florida Statutes and Codes of Ethics.

RYAN NICHOLS - Hardened Criminal?? Seriously??

If you're not already aware. This is what's going on in DC while dangerous criminals are allowed back out on the streets.  It's horrifying that this is happening to our citizens and veterans for protesting the hijacking of our election process. This is still happening! They are STILL being tortured and treated like full on terrorists.

You may not be aware of the typical things they're forced to go through...…
