TV reports wrong: Red, green OK at Heathrow school
November 29, 2010|By Dave Weber, Orlando Sentinel
The news ran wild Monday that Heathrow Elementary in Seminole County had banned red and green during December because the colors are associated with Christmas.
Fox and Friends and other conservative media outlets chided it as another sign of politically correct overkill.
But Seminole County school district officials said the report is erroneous.
"The banning of red and green is simply not true," said Regina Klaers, district spokesman.
The story, which originally ran on local WESH TV, quotes an outraged parent saying the school banned red and green because they are Christmas colors. But Klaers said the unidentified woman never checked with school officials.
Klaers said there have been no new teacher guidelines for Christmas observance at the school this year, as the reports claimed. Instead, the school is sticking to a years-old policy of celebrating winter rather than tying the season to Christian, Jewish or other holidays.
Snowflakes, snowmen and even evergreens might be the center of art projects and decorations.
And green and red are good to go, Klaers said.
