Is the United States A Constitutional Republic?
The Constitution as written by our founding fathers created a ( Constitutional)
republic.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
re·pub·lic
noun \ri-ˈpə-blik\
Definition of REPUBLIC
1
a (1) : a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in
modern times is usually a president (2) : a political unit (as a nation)
having such a form of government b (1) : a government in which supreme power
resides in a body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by elected
officers and representatives responsible to them and governing according to
law
(2) : a political unit (as a nation) having such a form of government c : a
usually specified republican government of a political unit
<the French Fourth Republic>
Strictly speaking, the U.S. was a "Compound Constitutional Republic", in that
there were two legislative bodies (the Senate and the House of Representatives)
each holding some power over the other, e.g. both bodies must agree to create
new laws.
The key is "elected officers and representatives RESPONSIBLE TO THEM"
Are our senators and representatives reall still responsible to the citizens
that elected them? Our legislature has frequently passed laws which are both
unconstitutional and opposed by a majority of the voters, e.g. "affordable
health care", the Department of Education etc.. Our legislators increasingly
favor their major contributers, the union bosses, big financial instutions
and socialists like George Soros.
So in reality our country is no longer a republic, neither is it a "democracy".
Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
de·moc·ra·cy
noun \di-ˈmä-krə-sē\
1
a : government by the people; especially : rule of the majority b : a
government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised
by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually
involving periodically held free elections
b : a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and
exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation
usually involving periodically held free elections
2
: a political unit that has a democratic government
3
capitalized : the principles and policies of the Democratic party in the
United States <from emancipation Republicanism to New Deal Democracy
(C. M. Roberts>
4
: the common people especially when constituting the source of political
authority
5
: the absence of hereditary or arbitrary class distinctions or privileges
It certainly not a democracy since "the common people" are not the source of
political authority, it is the money that is the source of authority.
What we have now is an Oligarchy.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary:
ol·i·gar·chy
noun \ˈä-lə-ˌgär-kē, ˈō-\
plural ol·i·gar·chies
Definition of OLIGARCHY
1
: government by the few
2
: a government in which a small group exercises control especially for corrupt
and selfish purposes; also : a group exercising such control
3
: an organization under oligarchic control
An "oligarchy" is certainly a much better description of how our government
operates than either a "republic" or "democracy". For an informative video
of only 10 minutes on how governments are created and evolve I urge you to view
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5nP5XSrrDwHow did this happen? We as citizens have allowed our elected officials to get
away with this gradual transformation by ignoring their actions. We the citizens
are the only ones who can reclaim what we have lost. We must demand that our
elected official abide by their oath of office:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution
of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will
bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely,
without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and
faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter:
So help me God."
