A look at some of the items the Jacksonville City Council will consider, and public hearings it will hold, at its meeting at 5 p.m. today at City Hall, 117 W. Duval St.
Issue: Internet gaming places
What it means: This council is asked to give final approval of the revised ordinance to limit the use slot machine-like games. The legislation would cap the number of these gaming establishments, establish permitting and fee requirements and set other regulations.
Bill No. 2010-326
Issue: Animal control
What it means: Committees have recommended approval of a bill that would drastically change city ordinances governing animal ownership and breeding. It includes sweeping changes to animal control laws, which had not been substantially revised in decades.
Bill No. 2010-527
Issue: Sex offenders at Halloween
What it means: A public hearing will be held on a proposal to regulate sex offenders’ participation in Halloween or other holidays that are widely celebrated by children. The bill would prohibit sex offenders from wearing costumes or distributing candy, and require warning signs at their houses.
