Of Thugs, Bullies, and Goons
Today, 26 Feb. 2011 was an interesting day in Tallahassee for Jane and me. This was our first contact with the MoveOn.org bunch, and the contrast with the well-mannered Tea Party folks was striking, to say the least. We 2, plus another couple from Lakeland were the only counter-protesters present, with approx. 250 rude, obnoxious, semi-violent thugs, bullies, and goons with their professionally-prepared signs and their red shirts, all cheering the various speakers, who mouthed the Michael Moore / George Soros line of B.S.. One speaker was a female (not a lady) who is a retired teacher, former head of Tallahassee’s teachers’ union, and a big-shot in the national union scene. Her name is Barbara Duvan. She stated at one point that (quote) “the f---ing Governor” (unquote) (Gov. Scott )was attempting to destroy the teachers’ union, and deprive the children of Florida of what they need.
If a Tea Party person used such language, it would go viral in 2 minutes in the lamestream media.
An individual claiming to be the local Supervisor of Elections asked all present to register “so we can vote these people out”. Hmmmm. Isn’t this a non-partisan office?
Due to our early arrival, we chose a spot in the middle of the “Dolphin Pool” perimeter on the new Capitol steps to stand about 16 inches above the crowd and display our homemade signs, which said “WE LUV THE GUVS, SCOTT + WALKER” and “GOV. SCOTT + GOV. WALKER ROCK!!”. As luck would have it, this was where the speakers set up their sound system. Much consternation was visible at this turn of events, so 4 burly goons were dispatched to make certain that my signs were obscured by theirs. By now, Jane was in the crowd taking pictures.
What followed was the sorriest behavior we’ve seen. The goons threatened me with being thrown in the Dolphin Pool, with “I’ll beat your f---in’ a--,” “Just wait until this is over, we’ll take care of you”, and I was struck several times on the front of my legs with a walking stick. All the while, Jane was being rudely jostled, shoved, and tripped. She summoned the police (only 2 were present), who promptly told her offenders to move on (no pun intended!)
The Tea Party was the object of much anger, and when shouts of “The Tea Party is Over” and “No More Tea” were made, we responded with “Tea Party is Just Starting” and “LOTS More TEA”. We proudly wore our FCTP shirts and hats.
I was granted a brief TV interview after demanding Equal Time. The reporter seemed surprised that there were any counter-protesters. I can’t wait to click on www.faceoffascism.org, since the goon webmaster said that I was their new poster child. I took off my sunglasses for him to take my picture!
This has gotten far too long, but I’ll close with some free advice (which is worth what you paid). It is absolutely IMPORTANT to have a large turnout for the 08 March Rally In Tally. I know it’s a Tuesday, but take a sick day, vacation day or somehow get there! We’ll be out of town, so it’s up to you. MoveOn.org is planning busloads of attendees, so it’ll be a big affair. Here are some hints that we learned the hard way:
- Don’t bring a sign unless it’s on a TALL stick. Even though we had large rigid posterboard signs, much scuffling, sign-dueling, and unpleasantness could have been avoided if the signs were taller than those of the bullies & thugs. Otherwise, yours will not be seen.
- Make certain to bring either a bullhorn or some sound system, as the goons will have at least one.
- Bring Febreeze to cleanse the air – these people STINK!
- Don’t forget water and comfortable shoes.
- Don’t expect polite disagreement – these are miserable, hateful people.
I’ve vented, so thanks for reading.
