Florida Lt. Gov. Quits; Tied to Firm under Investigation

Wednesday, 13 Mar 2013 10:20 AM

Florida's lieutenant governor has resigned because of her ties to an Internet cafe company that is now under federal investigation.

Jennifer Carroll's resignation was announced Wednesday, one day after she gave her resignation letter to Gov. Rick Scott. His chief of staff, Adam Hollingsworth, says her resignation was spurred by an investigation into the Allied Veterans of the World, which was once represented by Carroll.

Officials from that nonprofit Internet cafe company were recently arrested on racketeering charges. The owner was arrested Tuesday in connection to allegations that he made $290 million after supplying illegal gambling software in Florida and claiming the games' proceeds would benefit a veterans group. Authorities also interviewed Carroll.

Carroll's ties to the company were questioned when she was in the Legislature when she proposed a bill that would benefit Internet cafes.

FOP President Nelson Cuba arrested on racketeering charges

March 12, 2013

The head of the local Fraternal Order of Police Union and his first vice president were arrested on racketeering charges by FDLE Tuesday morning, according to a source close to the investigation.

The arrests of FOP President Nelson Cuba and the group’s vice president Robbie Freitas stem from a national investigation of St. Augustine-based Allied Veterans of America.

Also arrested were Jerry Bass, head of the veterans group; Mike Davis, an executive with the group; and Kelly Mathis, the group’s attorney.

Cuba, Freitas and Mathis are in the Seminole County’s John E. Polk Correctional Facitilty, according to the jail.

The investigation began in Seminole County. FDLE will not comment on the arrests, calling it an active investigation.

There is a 4 p.m. news conference at the FOP. The Times-Union will live blog from there.

More from our friend Curt Lee:
There is of course more to the story.    Reports indicate that Cuba was arrested at the annual pension conference sponsored by Klausner Kaufman Jensen & Levinson, attorneys for the Police & Fire Pension Fund, in Ft. Lauderdale.   KKJL is the firm that profits greatly (over $700,000) whilst John Keane engages in foolish and vindictive litigation.   Sadly, the City has used KKJL on occasion, despite the clear conflicts of interest, and KKJL's sleaze factor.   I have attempted to convince OGC to fire it - so far no luck.    John Keane and likely PFPF trustee Bobby Deal were at the conference with Cuba - they have gone in past years.    Plus, other City personnel were there - Terry Wood for the General Employees Pension Fund for example.   This conference - I have heard about it but never been invited (I wonder why?) is a typical pension conference - some "education", with time for fun and frolic of course.    (When I managed a pension fund, I attended a few pension conferences sponsored by other entities.)

And, of course, John Keane does not pay to go to dozens of pension conferences, out of his own pocket.   Taxpayers pay for his junkets.   The question is - why on earth was Cuba there?   He has no role in running the PFPF.  (Except - clearly Keane does what the unions tell him to do - an impropriety of course.)    Did taxpayers pay for Cuba's tab?   Getting that info will be like pulling teeth, of course.

Another sidelight - why was Cuba arrested while at such pension conference?  Was the FDLE trying to send a message?

What I have also heard is that the FOP and/or its officials have been alleged to have received some of the funds from Allied.

And you were there and heard all this?  No?  Well, from what I have read about this in relation to the Lt Governor, they have no plans to arrest or charge the "former" Lt Governor.  And Amanda, you don't seem to have a good thing to say about a sole, do you?  This has nothing whatever to do with Governor Scott who has done an exemplary job over all.

She lied to get a federal grant. She tried to submit a bill with a clear conflict of interest.

She resigned because the FDLE said we don't like arresting Lt. governors, former Lt. governors are okay.

Bet ya a stack of pancakes on this one. As for far more important things at the governor's office, would that be giving teachers raises, extending Medicaid, lobbying for Obamacare, raising the budget 4 billion dollars?

Amanda, I don't know that at all and neither do you.  She was in on this at the start and lent her name to it much as Hannity lends his name to Wounded Warriers.  Please do try not to try and convict someone before you and anyone else knows anything else about this.  As far as I know right now, Ms Carroll won't be charged with anything and very well not have even known what was going on.  She left her position, because she expected just what you are doing and didn't want it to touch the governor's office which has far more important things going on right now.

I imagine Carroll was probably pretty deep in this, she has already shown a proclivity for breaking rules.

RYAN NICHOLS - Hardened Criminal?? Seriously??

If you're not already aware. This is what's going on in DC while dangerous criminals are allowed back out on the streets.  It's horrifying that this is happening to our citizens and veterans for protesting the hijacking of our election process. This is still happening! They are STILL being tortured and treated like full on terrorists.

You may not be aware of the typical things they're forced to go through...…
