Twenty years ago Waste Management (WM) won the contract to run the first Trail Ridge landfill. Last spring the John Peyton pushed City Council to waive the usual open bidding rules on large City contracts, and agree to pay WM approximately $750,000,000 of taxpayer funds to operate a second landfill for an estimated 35 years. Both the Mayor and WM claimed no better deal could ever be forthcoming.
Mayor John Peyton is at it again. His new Ordinance is identical to what was rejected last year. Competition for contract renewal isn’t promised until 2045 with his new proposal. What has changed? Nothing.
The City’s own rules require a contract of this size to be competitively bid. All we are asking is for the City to follow its own rules.
Urge the members of the finance committee to reject Ordinance 2010-217.
