Subject: Action item: Senate Committee OKs Gun Background-Check Bill

The last article is a full cut and paste with excerpts above it (with links) from 2 other articles.  The contact info for the both Florida senators, Rep Crenshaw and Brown are included.  This is very, very serious, and right now calls, emails and letters from liberals are outnumbering conservative phone calls, Emails and letters who want the 2nd amendment left alone (shall not be infringed).  Please, please call or write to your senators and your representative.  This is very important as we do not want anymore of our rights taken away (and this is not the way to change a constitutional amendment...............there is a clearly defined way to change or amend the constitution period and this isn't it when the second amendment clearly states "shall not be infringed").

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday is set to approve expanded federal background checks for gun buyers, moving the measure to the full Senate, where it could come up for a vote next month before going to the GOP-controlled House.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a Democratic bill calling for background checks on all gun sales, which could potentially lead to the biggest change in U.S. gun laws in years.

But the likelihood of the full Senate approving such a bill is slim because of objections from Republicans.

Senate Committee OKs Gun Background-Check Bill

Mar 12, 2013 12:09pm

The Senate Judiciary Committee today passed a universal gun background-check bill on a strictly party-line vote: 10 to 8.

The committee also voted for a bill that would enhance school-safety initiatives with bipartisan support in a 14-4 vote. Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, were the Republicans voting to pass the bill. The committee will finish its consideration of the assault-weapons ban Thursday.

No Republicans voted in favor of the background check bill, which faced a snag last week after Republicans backed off negotiations with the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., was initially in talks with Schumer about the bill but ended his conversations with the New York senator last week. Sens. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., and Joe Manchin, D-W.V., also said they could not support the bill as it’s written. The bill will now head to the Senate floor with language that might not pass.

Schumer told the committee that he is open to negotiations with senators to amend the bill before it receives a final vote.

“I’ve been talking and am continuing to talk with colleagues across the political spectrum and across the aisle about a compromise approach and I remain optimistic that we’ll be able to roll one out. But we’re not 100 percent there yet,” Schumer said in the committee meeting today.

Current legislation only requires background checks to be performed when guns are purchased by licensed dealers. Schumer’s bill would expand the requirement of background checks to private sales between individuals.

Republicans have voiced concern about the bill leading to national registration and confiscation and infringing upon the rights of lawful gun owners.

“This bill would unnecessarily burden private sales,” Grassley, the committee’s ranking member, said. “I think it has unintended consequence. Obviously, criminals still get guns. They obtain them because they do not comply with background checks.

“The bill greatly restricts the right of law-abiding citizens,” he added.

Schumer said, “It’s sad. Right after Newtown, there was a view that maybe the right place that we could all come together on was background checks because background checks, unlike some of the other proposals here, which I support, do not interfere with the law-abiding citizens’ right to bear arms.

“The argument that my colleagues make that, ‘Well, they’ll still be people who will get around the law,’ that’s true. This isn’t going to be a perfect bill but it will sure reduce crimes.”

A new ABC News-Washington Post poll released today showed that 91 percent of the public supports a universal background-check bill.

The Senate Judiciary Committee passed a bill last week that makes “straw” purchases illegal, the first gun measure since the December shooting deaths at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut.

Well if Obama were a socialist, then he would he take money from the rich people and make sure your healthcare bills weren't so high. Bob and Patricia your complaints are ridiculous. Social security checks aren't getting bigger fast enough and healthcare that isn't all payed for. Can you hear yourselves? You are the socialists.

Obama isn't a liberal, Obama is a Marxist. The only thing in the way of a dictatorship is our 2nd amendment.

Bob, I know.  They reached out and took right at an extra $100 a month from us as well.  For some people, given they lied about the cost of living not going up, because they keep changing the basket of goods used, without any cost of living increases in social security, and the increases in expenses, many are where you are.  I feel so bad for those folks that were so uninformed they did not see this man for what he is and will always be.  He hasn't got one caring bone in his whole body and he truly hates us and this country!

The copay for the prescriptions I need each month increased $80.00 and it was already a substantial part of my retirement income. My daughter is only allowed to work 35 hours a week and my grandson is in the same boat.  My son  in law gets 40 hours but must drive 40 mioles to work. All of this is due to obamacare. Add in increased fuel costs to get everyone to work, increased food costs and increased withholding on paychecks and this family is hurting. I used to try to maintain a buffer fund for unexpected expenses. Now, if the water pump breaks or the car breaks down it is hard to solve the problem. We've always worked hard in this family and used to do very well. Those days are gone for us.

Bob, I agree with your comment about registration and confiscation.  I believe the king has pushed for a revolution and thinks it is coming.  I think next year when everyone's health insurance costs double and millions lose their current coverage and folks start being put on part time instead of full time, it is going to get pretty dicey and very ugly.  It is also why this total piece of garbage in the white house wants to be able to use drones to kill people without a trial or anything and why homeland security is arming itself to the teeth as are other departments.............and not with bullets they can use outside this country........and they sure aren't using them for target practice (as the witch at DHS says), because hollow points are not used for target practice (way too expensive and not what is used to start with).  I think we let the folks in Washington go too far and this is more of the same!

What is proposed now would require universal registration to work, and universal registration is the real goal. Universal registration WILL  open the door to universal confiscation, you can bet on that!

Amanda I've been fighting this battle for 56 of my 70 years, I know what the liberals want. Don't talk to me about being an adult, I was an adult long before you were born. You need to move your butt to Democrat Underground, where it belongs.

Amanda, don't you even dare come on this web site and lecture anyone.  You are the nut job and you are the one with the blinders and tin hat.  It called brain washed, so don't talk to a single person here about being an adult.  You can't accept it that not every person has your abnormal view of how things should be and you just keep slinging the half truths and garbage until people leave this web site because they don't want to have to deal with you.  You promised you were gone and would not come back, and now you are back with more garbage only now you are worse than you were before.  You just can't seem to understand that NO ONE HERE AGREES WITH YOU AND THEY ARE NOT LIKELY TO EITHER.

Bob you are wrong. Who do you think permits this to happen? Rubio? Scott? You? It is ridiculous to even say. No one has proposed anyhting close to what you say. Tinfoil hat time. Agenda 21. Muslims.

Stop being afraid, it is unbecoming an adult.

All sales by licensed dealers require background checks. Current law prohibits trolling dealer records to discover who bought what but the sales are recorded in detail by dealers. Records of dealer inventory must also be maintained by each dealer. What is proposed now would require universal registration to work, and universal registration is the real goal. Universal registration WILL  open the door to universal confiscation, you can bet on that!  Liberal gun grabbers are liars, first and foremost. They do not support the 2nd amendment in any way, to any degree. Amanda may be dumb enough to believe Barack Obama's promises but I'm damned sure not. I really believe that Amanda would be overjoyed to see federal agents going door to door, killing American citizens and confiscating guns. It will lead to this Amanda, the resistance is forming all across this Nation.  Citizens and Sheriff's departments all over America are pledging to resist more gun laws, and they mean what they're saying. New York is thought of as a liberal state, this map shows what New Yorkers really stand for.

Amanda, you are certainly not rational.  You want personal responsibility, but only if the subject of that responsibility suits you.  You just finsished telling us how slugs could sit on their behinds at home and it was only fair those who worked their tails off support them without a word one about personal responsiblity.  The liberal catch word for that was "FAIR".  Now, all of a sudden, you are in to personal responsibility?   As you just finished saying (tongue in cheek)................you have a selective absolutist position on some things from where I am sitting.

This is what's going on in DC while dangerous criminals are allowed back out on the streets.  It's horrifying that this is happening to our citizens and veterans for protesting the hijacking of our election process. This is still happening! They are STILL being tortured and treated like full on terrorists.
