Subject: Action item: Senate Committee OKs Gun Background-Check Bill

The last article is a full cut and paste with excerpts above it (with links) from 2 other articles.  The contact info for the both Florida senators, Rep Crenshaw and Brown are included.  This is very, very serious, and right now calls, emails and letters from liberals are outnumbering conservative phone calls, Emails and letters who want the 2nd amendment left alone (shall not be infringed).  Please, please call or write to your senators and your representative.  This is very important as we do not want anymore of our rights taken away (and this is not the way to change a constitutional amendment...............there is a clearly defined way to change or amend the constitution period and this isn't it when the second amendment clearly states "shall not be infringed").

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday is set to approve expanded federal background checks for gun buyers, moving the measure to the full Senate, where it could come up for a vote next month before going to the GOP-controlled House.

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a Democratic bill calling for background checks on all gun sales, which could potentially lead to the biggest change in U.S. gun laws in years.

But the likelihood of the full Senate approving such a bill is slim because of objections from Republicans.

Senate Committee OKs Gun Background-Check Bill

Mar 12, 2013 12:09pm

The Senate Judiciary Committee today passed a universal gun background-check bill on a strictly party-line vote: 10 to 8.

The committee also voted for a bill that would enhance school-safety initiatives with bipartisan support in a 14-4 vote. Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, were the Republicans voting to pass the bill. The committee will finish its consideration of the assault-weapons ban Thursday.

No Republicans voted in favor of the background check bill, which faced a snag last week after Republicans backed off negotiations with the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., was initially in talks with Schumer about the bill but ended his conversations with the New York senator last week. Sens. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., and Joe Manchin, D-W.V., also said they could not support the bill as it’s written. The bill will now head to the Senate floor with language that might not pass.

Schumer told the committee that he is open to negotiations with senators to amend the bill before it receives a final vote.

“I’ve been talking and am continuing to talk with colleagues across the political spectrum and across the aisle about a compromise approach and I remain optimistic that we’ll be able to roll one out. But we’re not 100 percent there yet,” Schumer said in the committee meeting today.

Current legislation only requires background checks to be performed when guns are purchased by licensed dealers. Schumer’s bill would expand the requirement of background checks to private sales between individuals.

Republicans have voiced concern about the bill leading to national registration and confiscation and infringing upon the rights of lawful gun owners.

“This bill would unnecessarily burden private sales,” Grassley, the committee’s ranking member, said. “I think it has unintended consequence. Obviously, criminals still get guns. They obtain them because they do not comply with background checks.

“The bill greatly restricts the right of law-abiding citizens,” he added.

Schumer said, “It’s sad. Right after Newtown, there was a view that maybe the right place that we could all come together on was background checks because background checks, unlike some of the other proposals here, which I support, do not interfere with the law-abiding citizens’ right to bear arms.

“The argument that my colleagues make that, ‘Well, they’ll still be people who will get around the law,’ that’s true. This isn’t going to be a perfect bill but it will sure reduce crimes.”

A new ABC News-Washington Post poll released today showed that 91 percent of the public supports a universal background-check bill.

The Senate Judiciary Committee passed a bill last week that makes “straw” purchases illegal, the first gun measure since the December shooting deaths at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut.

No Patricia, 40% of all weapons purchases do not include a background check. If you want a absolutist postion on this issue, then everyone should be allowed to own a weapon whether they be felons or crazies. The Constitution says congress can make NO laws regarding the right to bear arms. Nothing in the Constitution about killers or crazies. Plus there is nothing that says we can't own automatic weapons, or bazookas or whatever.

We are provided the choice to be rational.

Chuckie Shumer's bill (S.374) wants to increase background checks by giving individual states grants to establish or enhance information reporting systems in each state that will give the feds accurate information when making NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check Systems) checks.  States will be required to report accurate information demanded by the bill or lose the grant money intended to establish or enhance their reporting system.  100 million dollars will be appropriated for each fiscal year starting with 2014 through 2018.  Yet another waste of time and taxpayer money promulgated by a statist Democrat.

18 U.S.C. Section 922(g)(4) already prohibits a person who has been "adjudicated as a mental defective" or "committed to a mental institution" to ship, transport, receive, or possess any firearm or ammunition.  Punishable by a penalty of $250,000 and/or imprisonment of up to ten years.

Apparently, Adam Lanza, the Sandy Hook Elementary School killer, had mental issues that his mother knew about but reportedly did nothing to get help for him.  Adam murdered his mother in her bed before going to the school.  His mother was a registered gun owner who apparently allowed Adam access to the firearms she owned.  It has also been reported that Adam Lanza studied other mass murders before committing his own.

Nothing in the current federal law or Shumer's proposed law would have prevented the killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, because Adam Lanza does not fit the federal criteria and stole his mother's guns to use.

The only thing that would have come close to preventing that massacre is complete and total confiscation of all firearms in the United States.  No thank you.  I want to be able to defend myself and my family from criminals and mentally unstable people who possess a firearm either legally or illegally.

Amanda, this is from 1999 (and this is 2013) and is specifically for "criminal background checks".   We have a background check law on the books right now and it covers all including gun shows and a limit on how long those records can be kept and no data base is kept. I have no idea what something from 1999 has to do with what is being proposed right now which is far more intrusive and takes it much further giving the government a data base of who owns and what they own laying the ground work for gun registration followed by confiscation (which is what has happened in every single place where such a thing was allowed followed by some horrific stuff that no one could protect themselves against). You just don't seem to be able to get off an issue that has zero relevance to the current issue at all. What in heavens name is your problem and I might add, I really don't care what you want either.  You are a crazy, because like all the rest of the liberal weinies, you are trying to blame the gun and not the mentally ill person.  None of you liberal weinies are addressing the problem; you are trying to get rid of the second amendment which has been a dream of Feinstein and this president too for that matter.  Don't you all enough of your organizing wall street friends you can get to agree with you on anything you say????

OK Amanda the problem has been these shootings are from people who have mental problems which the aclu says no you can't include that on a background check. this gun thing should include cars knives trucks ect. the gun does't do the killing it takes a trigger finger. i will tell you to do these shootings you have to be crazy.again it starts at home with the parents. just blame it on this so called a.d.h.d. instead of a slap across the behind when needed. and watch what your kids are playing in this tech world. but every body can change there mind for know. until your dictator takes that away to.

Seems rather silly to expect law abiding citizens to do as proposed but not to expect others to be responsible for themselves (much less a gun).  These "others" are supposed to be able to take no responsibility for themselves or their families (no matter how many babies they pop out), and someone else is supposed to provide for them to be "fair", but someone who pays their own freight but owns a gun is supposed to be accountable to all including those he/she supports because they are too shiftless to do it for themselves?  Does that make sense really?.  And no, the NRA did not support what is being proposed right now EVER.

What freedom did I propose limiting? None. Own all the guns you want. But register them and you are accountable for what happens with them. It is called responsible ownership. Something that the NRA supported as few as 12 years ago.

Bob I agree but people like that are not worth our time we have alot to do. her kind who is still felling guilty about something that happened 250 yrs. ago because her dems. were the ones who tried to keep people in chains. Thats why nothing was said when the dems had all three and gave away 17 mil. on the pigford act. then it was the mexicans turn and got millions. i'm over those kind of people they have serious mental issues and i'm not a doctor. but bengozie, gun laws, afford. healthcare. he has not done 1 thing to help this country. but why would he he hates this country. he just took advantage of what we have to offer. in his own words in his book he admits he hung out smoking dope and drinking no job but went to the best schools money can buy and suppose to be so smart but seal my records he said his wife who said for the first time i am proud of my country. first time what about what the hell we have been through before or the hockey game we won. she admits with her 32 maids what a high maint. anyway she said she hates our WhiteHouse.and yet they voted for this idiot. the heck with the libs lets fight for our freedom.

Amanda has a free Obamaphone and free Obama  birth control, only reason I can think of for her to hang out here is that no one wants her to call, no one calls her, and she has no use for the birth control.

Maybe she should call Obama!

I noticed about 3 month's ago her tone just like hussains. i would hope she would notice just what kind of snake this hussain really is. he always uses the weekness of other people to get out of taking resposibility. he has torn this nation apart and the people getting all there gifts each month don't care. they have no self respect.but then again hussain refuses to create jobs because the people would not need the GOV. just like the dem. didn't want the slaves to learn how to read then they would know who was really behind this terrible stuff. Good Night TO All CONSERVATIVES & REPUBLICANS and all AMERICANS thank you GOD for the tea party ......

RYAN NICHOLS - Hardened Criminal?? Seriously??

If you're not already aware. This is what's going on in DC while dangerous criminals are allowed back out on the streets.  It's horrifying that this is happening to our citizens and veterans for protesting the hijacking of our election process. This is still happening! They are STILL being tortured and treated like full on terrorists.

You may not be aware of the typical things they're forced to go through...…
