Personally, I thank heavens our state legislature is moving on this issue. Although it would mean losing good folks when we may not wish to, it will rid us of the really bad representation as well without it dragging on for years and years and more years. How do you feel about this? It may be time to weigh in with your state representatives and let them know your feelings on this issue.

The Florida Legislature has become the first state governing body to call for term limits for members of the U.S. Congress. The Legislature has had a rough term thus far with the recent redistricting debacle as well as with in-fighting amongst “Charlie Crist” Republican holdouts and more ‘conservative’ legislators, put this measure could end the 2012 Legislative session on a positive note. The self-described “most conservative” Legislature can now affix a well deserved feather in its their cap with this bold ‘Tea Party-esque’ move.
Florida is the first state to take this step, but it will likely not be the last. With term limits polling at all-time highs and the Congress at record lows, pressure is building around the nation for Congress to take action.
Sen. Jim DeMint and Rep. David Schweikert have introduced a constitutional amendment (SJR 11 and HJR 71, respectively) that limits congressional terms in the Senate and House. While the Florida action does not specifically mention any specific legislative proposal, it becomes the first state to propose a congressional term limitation via a constitutional amendment. Voters overwhelmingly supported Florida’s state constitutional limits on state legislators in 1992 with 77 percent support. Polling from Quinnipiac University in 2009 suggests 82 percent of Floridians continue to support term limits on public officials.
