The transition team advising Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown on transportation is suggesting he consider the first new public transit option in downtown since the Skyway.
In a report Brown received last week, the group recommended Brown publicly endorse and work to move forward with a trolley streetcar that would run on tracks through the downtown. The estimated cost of building this system is about $71 million.
Brown has not commented on the report.
"The mayor isn't there yet on a streetcar," spokesman Abel Harding said. "But it is an interesting idea that should be looked at further."
A streetcar might face opposition from people who don't want another Skyway. The elevated people mover has never come close to meeting its ridership and revenue projections since it was built in the 1980s.
But transition team members say this is different.
"The Skyway was never finished," argued Ennis Davis, who served on the transition team. "If you'd stopped building the Dames Point bridge halfway it wouldn't work well either."

You may not be aware of the typical things they're forced to go through...…
