An Arlington dog park project that was up for a vote Tuesday by Jacksonville’s City Council was postponed for two weeks while backers look for private funding.
Councilman Bill Bishop had sponsored a bill to release $75,000 for construction at Ed Austin Regional Park. He said neighboring Councilman Clay Yarborough asked for the delay while he looked into other ways to cover some costs.
Bishop said he applauded the idea.
“If we can [cut costs], great. It will cost even less,” Bishop said.
Two council committees approved the bill (2012-70) last week, but it was criticized by some council members and budget hawks who said the city had more pressing needs to pay for.
Public reaction wasn’t huge — Bishop’s email had notes from nine supporters and 19 opponents — but highlighted a skepticism that has lingered around the project.
This is the second time Bishop has tried to get the dog park built.
He first championed the project in a 2010 bill that was eventually withdrawn after opponents criticized the $112,000 price tag.
