Every major bridge in Duval County is now equipped with wind meters that will tell authorities when it's time to shut down the crossings during storms.
The Florida Department of Transportation installed them this year at a cost of about $4,500 each, including one on the Intracoastal Waterway in Nassau County. Two more are set to be installed in St. Johns County on the County Road 210-Palm Valley bridge and the Bridge of Lions.
In the past, law enforcement at each bridge determined when to close them due to high winds, said Pete Vega, FDOT intelligent transportation engineer.
