ICYMI: RUBIO CALLS OUT PRESIDENT'S SOCIAL SECURITY SCARE TACTICS

"If they don’t get their Social Security checks, it’s because the President’s decided to do that, because we still have revenue coming in. ... I think people are going to be shocked to learn the real truth about what the government’s done with their Social Security money."

Sen. Rubio: People Are Going to Be Shocked to Learn the Real Truth About What the Government’s Done With Their Social Security Money

Hugh Hewitt: “Senator Rubio, you represent a lot of senior citizens in Florida. The country knows that. I think it’s despicable to scare them this way. What’s your reaction to the President’s threat to hold their Social Security checks hostage?”

Sen. Rubio: “Well, if they don’t get their Social Security checks, it’s because the President’s decided to do that, because we still have revenue coming in. Here’s the other thing I would say. If in fact the President holds up their checks for Social Security, and Medicare, and whatever else he wants to hold up to make his point, isn’t he admitting that all these programs are funded by deficit spending? Isn’t he admitting that all these programs are dependent upon borrowed money?

“And I think the folks who are on Social Security, people like my mom, would be shocked to learn the truth that the money that they’re receiving in Social Security isn’t the money they worked hard for all these years to put away, the government was going to give back to them in their retirement. The government spent all that money already. They spent it long ago on other things. This is borrowed money. This is money that we’re borrowing from our children and our grandchildren. And I think people are going to, if that happens, I think people are going to be shocked to learn the real truth about what the government’s done with their Social Security money.”

Sen. Rubio: This Issue of the Debt Limit Didn’t Sneak Up On Us

Hugh Hewitt: “Do you think the negotiations that he had lured Republicans into over the last couple of weeks have been in bad faith?”

Sen. Rubio: “Well, I wasn’t in those negotiations, so I’d hate to characterize something I wasn’t a part of. Let me say that he was late to the game.

“First of all, the President, this is not a new issue, okay? This issue of the debt limit didn’t sneak up on us. This has been around for a while. We knew this was coming. And then the President’s done nothing on it. He gave a state of the union speech this year, never mentioned any plans about how to address this. He offered a budget before Congress, and the budget was so bad, I mean, it actually increased the debt. His budget was so bad, so unrealistic, that when we put it to a vote here in the Senate, not even a single Democrat voted for it. That’s how bad it was. It didn’t get a single vote.

“So he’s had multiple opportunities to deal with this, and he’s kind of punted and moved the ball along, and focused on other things. And now, with three weeks to go, two weeks to go, all of a sudden, he wants to ride in and act like he’s leading. Well, he’s not leading. In fact, what he’s doing is he’s trying to position this as a political issue, so he can claim victory for his 2012 election. But the reality of it is that people know better, they’re going to realize it, we’re going to continue to talk about it.”

Texas' own Rick Perry is "staging" a breakout onto the presidential turf, so people might want to read up on him from an honest writer with no inhibitions from "political correctness"...enjoy.

Boomers contributed very little to SS?  Are you kidding me, the boomers are the ones who contributed the most and for the longest time.  The government raided the SS coffer and they are giving it to people who have never paid in a dime in their entire life.  It was set up for those who paid in, and the eligible recipients keeps changing.  Good grief, I am sick of people blaming the boomers.  The boomers are the ones who built America, the ones who worked and are working hard and paid and are paying taxes. We are taxed to death. As far as places to cut, look at where it is currently being spent.  There are multitudes of places starting with aid to countries who hate us and want to destroy us.  Grants to study the mating habits of flies... again good grief is this necessary? and it isn't a couple of hundred bucks, it is hundreds of thousands of dollars.  The more they tax, the more they spend.....where does it end?

It appears Ms. Choate ignores or has no, knowledge of the liberals raiding the S.S.Trust during the LBJ "Great Society".  The commie liberals stole the money (LBJ was quite the "ballot box thief", also) and left useless I.O.U's in the coffers.  If it is ignorance, which type is it?  Selective or sincere.  Otherwise I have to believe it is her "education" in a government socialist school (public-tax supported).  The other possibility I've already alluded to, "the seminary socialist plant".  So in the great tradition of Sol Alinsky, blame a class of citizenry.  If this were Germany in the mid-thirties, you would be similarly encouraging the demise of german citizens know as Jews.

Durwin, I agree wholeheartedly.  Amanda, you summed it up quite nicely (although I'm not for taxing).  I think if we cut enough, we should be okay.

Durwin, your post so articulates our mess as a nation. Though obviously a 40 trillion dollar hole is more than just moochers, it is baby boomers. The number of workers to recepients as flip-flopped and that is the issue. Boomers paid in very little because there were so few to care for at the time. But the huge bulge of boomers retiring in the next 15 years will put tremendous pressure on the US workforce, in addition to the increased life expectancy of current retireees. Used to be, prior to medicare, people quit work, lost their healthcare, got sick and died. Very much on the cheap. They were spent and no longer able to produce. Families picked up where they could, but even then, with health care costs low most couldn't afford whatever was available.

So my question is this: I  understand no one  wants higher taxes, but when you look at what is left to cut, there is only several ways to balance this budget.

Cut military spending back to 2002 levels.

End medicare as we know it.

Social security isn't really a problem, it is manageable.

But we have to take our medicine.

Tamara, Medicaid has non-contributing participants.  These come from a large moocher group.  Professional Moochers, such as Criminal Invaders, lifetime welfare recipients, etcetera.  Remember, socialistic security (oximoron that it is) was always a designed socialist ponzi scheme.  If medicaid were eliminated, along with food stamps, section 8 housing, wix and all other straight up moocher socialist programs, medicare would be viable.  By this, please do not mistaken me for advocating Medicare.  Phase it out.  Mandate by law, each individual has to prove they have invested in an annuity or retirement program of at least five per cent of their base wage each pay period.  Yes you socialists, PRIVITIZE!!!  Also, churches and foundations appreciate tax free status and this is the reason; to aid the infirm and elderly.  Not to hold socialist political events.

Social security can be tweaked to become solvent.  I don't see any way with all of the baby boomers about to retire how medicare will not become a bigger drain on the budget.  Medicare/medicaid costs as much as defense!  And by the way, Medicaid goes to the elderly more than any other group.  that is truly unbelievable.  Theresa, your ideas for cutting are pretty harsh.  WIC?  but don't touch my medicare (which isn't paid for  either? )  wow.  wake up.  look at the pie chart.  if we are going to be honest, let's talk medicare.

Durwin, since when did pointing out the fact we are going broke become lib? Google unfunded medicare and you will see how the number comes to be. David Brooks writes today of the baby boomers having accepted a solvent country and leaving behind an inssolvent one. And now you believe complaining about the huge hole left by Medicare somehow makes me a lib. How on earth does that make sense? Pelosi is the one saying nobody better touch Medicare or social security. Durwin you have it backwards, I do not know how that happens, but it did. That makes me think you care more about yourself than this country or what is left behind.

No Tamara foreign aid especially to hamas, egypt, or the un should be cut...why are we aiding our enemies?  SSI, welfare, medicade, wic, and foodstamps need to be cut...as you stated you have been paying into SS and MediCARE since you were 16 and by the time you reach 65 you will have paid into it for 49 years...I'd say you are entitled to collect it and use it... think if we had the option to just put it in the bank every payday and NOT give it to the government to hand out to whomever they see fit and NOT the people who are paying for it!   Notice these clowns we call lawmakers have exempted themselves and their families from what they are CRAMMING and RAMMING down our throats with backroom and late night deals :(

Don't worry about "having to accept Medicare", because obamacare is heading our way.  Prior to obamacare, you had the option of buying private insurance vs "Medicare Complete" for the Part B coverage (docs, tests, etc.) but I can't imagine anyone doing that voluntarily, if my final year under Blue Cross was any indication.  So far I have been a net contributor to the Medicare bottom line, and really hope my good fortune continues that way!  Will I have to pay a lot more for obamacare?  Probably will since I do not have a lobbyist to apply for my waiver.  We all will, or those of us without a lobbyist will be paying the shortfall.
