ICYMI: RUBIO CALLS OUT PRESIDENT'S SOCIAL SECURITY SCARE TACTICS
"If they don’t get their Social Security checks, it’s because the President’s decided to do that, because we still have revenue coming in. ... I think people are going to be shocked to learn the real truth about what the government’s done with their Social Security money."

Sen. Rubio: People Are Going to Be Shocked to Learn the Real Truth About What the Government’s Done With Their Social Security Money
Hugh Hewitt: “Senator Rubio, you represent a lot of senior citizens in Florida. The country knows that. I think it’s despicable to scare them this way. What’s your reaction to the President’s threat to hold their Social Security checks hostage?”
Sen. Rubio: “Well, if they don’t get their Social Security checks, it’s because the President’s decided to do that, because we still have revenue coming in. Here’s the other thing I would say. If in fact the President holds up their checks for Social Security, and Medicare, and whatever else he wants to hold up to make his point, isn’t he admitting that all these programs are funded by deficit spending? Isn’t he admitting that all these programs are dependent upon borrowed money?
“And I think the folks who are on Social Security, people like my mom, would be shocked to learn the truth that the money that they’re receiving in Social Security isn’t the money they worked hard for all these years to put away, the government was going to give back to them in their retirement. The government spent all that money already. They spent it long ago on other things. This is borrowed money. This is money that we’re borrowing from our children and our grandchildren. And I think people are going to, if that happens, I think people are going to be shocked to learn the real truth about what the government’s done with their Social Security money.”
Sen. Rubio: This Issue of the Debt Limit Didn’t Sneak Up On Us
Hugh Hewitt: “Do you think the negotiations that he had lured Republicans into over the last couple of weeks have been in bad faith?”
Sen. Rubio: “Well, I wasn’t in those negotiations, so I’d hate to characterize something I wasn’t a part of. Let me say that he was late to the game.
“First of all, the President, this is not a new issue, okay? This issue of the debt limit didn’t sneak up on us. This has been around for a while. We knew this was coming. And then the President’s done nothing on it. He gave a state of the union speech this year, never mentioned any plans about how to address this. He offered a budget before Congress, and the budget was so bad, I mean, it actually increased the debt. His budget was so bad, so unrealistic, that when we put it to a vote here in the Senate, not even a single Democrat voted for it. That’s how bad it was. It didn’t get a single vote.
“So he’s had multiple opportunities to deal with this, and he’s kind of punted and moved the ball along, and focused on other things. And now, with three weeks to go, two weeks to go, all of a sudden, he wants to ride in and act like he’s leading. Well, he’s not leading. In fact, what he’s doing is he’s trying to position this as a political issue, so he can claim victory for his 2012 election. But the reality of it is that people know better, they’re going to realize it, we’re going to continue to talk about it.”

Joe, I do have tricare and am over 65, so I must pay roughly 10% of what I receive for social security for medicare....in other words I pay insurance premiums for insurance to cover my health care, and tricare acts as the secondary insurance. I also understand about . I do get meds through tricare and no I did not go for the tricare prime is that it left the decisions I was making up to a doctor to make and decide if I should see a specialist or even have 2 doctors for 2 different things.......which I do, because I don't like putting all my eggs in one basket or trusting a total stranger to do what is in my best interests. I was just saying, like all things the government promises, they hardly ever keep their word and yet people keep right on trusting them. UGHHHH. Why. And in fact, if Obama could have done it, he would have thrown retired military and active duty under the bus and given our health care benefits to the sit on the couch at home bunch.
And Amanda, I dare say over the 50 plus years my husband and I have paid into the system, I think most likely the $120,000 number is very low by the time you figure interest and everything. I think if you look at what is taken out of your paycheck every week or two weeks, and figure out how long you will pay and what the interst on it might have been up to the point we went into the depression/recession or whatever we are calling it these days, it amounts to a good amount of money over a prolonged period. My husband paid the maximum they can take for many, many years and I also paid at his rate as I did with the income tax. Someone did the numbers on social security one time, and if you did it for a quite a bit shorter period of time and invested the money, you would have enough to pull a little over 27,000 a year for life without ever touching the principle. I can guarantee you I don't get 27,000 a year from social security and neither does my husband, so do not undercut or think people didn't pay in a large sum of money as they did. Further, if the group in Washington had invested the money collected and not stolen in, I am betting social security probably would have survived the baby boomers..........
Mr. Strange, One more thing...
That same bus you accused me of throwing my parents and grandparents under, well they were adults and knew what they were getting into. YOUR grandchildren ar egoing to be asked to pay a bill that they were no a party to in any sense. That bus that you are willing to throw them under is a lot bigger.
First of all:
Mr. Morrison, Obamacare does nothing to save Medicare, except that he pulled 500 million from its funding to fund Obamacare. It might reduce the rate of growth and little more.
But yes the unfunded portion of medicare is 40 trillion dollars.
No i am not suggesting hte treasury give back that money, it is gone, it has been spent. We have no means of making that happen either. Consider Mr. Ryan's plan where Medicare Recipients receive vouchers of say $6,000 a year to buy insurance. $6,000 is the low number. Now lets say you live only 20 years on medicare. That is $120,000. Who here thinks they paid in anything close to that? No one.
10% of Medicare beneficiaries account for 63% of the spending.
Average spending per beneficiary in 2007- $14,471
2007 is three years before the first boomer qualifies. Once boomers go into the program, game over.
Mr. Strange, my mother passed before ever receiving a single dollar from medicare.
Both grandfathers passed prior to 1965.
One of my grandmothers lived with us until the day she died, there was no care provided to her that her family did not provide directly or indirectly.
My other grandmother was killed by her surgeon who decided that a 94 year old woman needed bowel surgery, for a partial obstruction. She died five days later. Had there been no Medicare payments to spur this whack on, they would have chosen the much less invasive procedure. But he scared my grandmother into think she could die without the surgery, but she suffered an incredibly painful death due to sepsis because of it.
My father, has health benefits from his employer that are augmented by medicare.
My father thinks the world of me and I love him dearly. He provided for his family by working a sometimes hellish job for forty years. He taught me to respect money and take care of myself. That is what I am doing. My father agrees with me. He is a realist.
Either agree to pay for it or stop pretending. And truly I am sorry for that you guys bought a load of poo. But why should I pay when it is so obvious it will not be there for me? Because I shouldn't throw people under the bus. Everyone here talks about welfare recipients, state workers, poor kids as though they are moochers, but I will just say this one last time, medicare is unfunded to the tune of 40 trillion dollars. That isn't something that I just made up. 40 trillion. You tell me how that gets handled then please. Don't call me names until you have a solution. That bill isn't just going away.
Amanda:
I guess I don't come from a family that throws parents and Grandparents under the bus. You have your rights to say and think anything you want. I wonder what your mom & dad think of you.
40 Trillion dollars, really? Thank God Obamacare will make that go away and life will be good again. Maybe since people are living longer and healthier lives, the Medicare eleigility age could be pushed up incrementally to age 70. If such action supposedly creates more SS funds then perhaps it will work for Medicare as well? And are you suggesting the Treasury give back the money taken from SS for "other purposes" in earlier times and currently? I support that idea wholeheartedly, but that went by the wayside as soon as the pols saw "that big pile of money just sitting there doing nothing" while "people were suffering" (sound familiar?) - like having a dog guarding a butcher shop. Again no simple answers. Take the cap off SS income maximum ($106,000) and make it unlimited like Medicare withholding - I haven't heard that proposed. Makes more sense to me than "higher taxes on the rich" which will be loopholed out - can't loophole FICA (well maybe not).
Electing honest brokers to be in our govt. with honest citizens in partnership is the ideal we should strive for, not the game of gotcha being played at our expense.
Joe,
Absolutely. And what is your point? My money is my money.
Amanda:
WOW...............just a simple question. Did your Grandparents mooch off of medicare? How about your parents?
Medicare is the biggest "moocher" program there is, dwarfing everything else. It is more than 3 times the national debt. Medicare recipients are the mooches.
If you're not already aware. This is what's going on in DC while dangerous criminals are allowed back out on the streets. It's horrifying that this is happening to our citizens and veterans for protesting the hijacking of our election process. This is still happening! They are STILL being tortured and treated like full on terrorists.
You may not be aware of the typical things they're forced to go through...…
