Local Jacksonville News from the Times Union (and a couple of state articles as well)

I have included some state news as well this week as there were a couple of interesting articles.  There wasn't much compared to other weeks and as I stated, if you would like a copy of  a letter from one of our councilmen about the courthouse furniture or you don't get Mayor Brown's newletters and would like to see who is donating money to the city to do some things we might not otherwise be able to do, let me know and I will be very happy to send it your way.  Hope you all had a wonderful Mother's Day!

FCAT writing scores plunge across Florida
Superintendents say don't panic as board calls for an emergency session
My thought might be to go back to the old way of teaching children as this new method they seem to want to use "to move us into the 21st century, which ignores math and writing, isn't working any better than all the money they spend (to hire more administrators).   This is a total outrage!  More from the article:

"Don't panic.

That's the message from Northeast Florida school district superintendents after students' scores statewide dropped precipitously in the new writing portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.

How bad are the scores? Well, the state Board of Education called an emergency session for this morning to discuss what happened and what to do about it.

Individual school district scores aren't available yet, but statewide preliminary data does not look good".

Jacksonville Council faces legislation to allow free parking for council and visitors
You do have to laugh about this somewhat.  They are in favor of giving themselves free parking but want the folks who pay the bills to continue paying for parking?  Really?

An unpopular plan to give Jacksonville City Council members garage parking inside City Hall has been merged with a popular plan to let residents park free – one block over -- when they come to City Hall.

“To me, that takes care of any issues from the public that we’re getting something they’re not,” Council President Stephen Joost said during the first of two committee discussions this week on the bill (2012-215).

But the bill’s final outcome isn’t clear, having been voted down by one panel and approved by another as it was sent to the full council for a vote next week.An unpopular plan to give Jacksonville City Council members garage parking inside City Hall has been merged with a popular plan to let residents park free – one block over -- when they come to City Hall.

Furniture veto earns Alvin Brown 'winner of the week' in Florida politics
I am also posting the letter from John Crescimbeni to someone who wrote about this (if you would like a copy of the letter, please let me know and will send to you).  It seems even if all of the old furniture were used, there isn't enough furniture to fill the court house.  The cost for furniture has also been cut significantly and the purchase must be made or leave rooms which will be used empty.  The vote was 18 for and 1 against at city council and the mayor vetoed the bill:

From the Tampa Bay Times:

Winner of the week: Alvin Brown. The mayor of Jacksonville last week vetoed his City Council's plan to spend $750,000 on new furniture for a new county courthouse. The old furniture is fine, said the mayor, who is expected to be overridden by the council. Still, it sounds like Brown is the one with his finger on public sentiment in these tough times.

Mitt Romney to stop at Jax's River City Brewing Company

Though Mitt Romney's experience with beer ended at one, he will be making a Thursday campaign stop at Jacksonville's River City Brewing Company.   Romney is in town for a fundraiser at Epping Forest Yacht Club. It is part of a money swing Romney is making through Florida.  The River City stop may seem out of character. Romney, a Mormon, told People Magazine in November that he's not much for the suds.  "Never had drinks or tobacco. It's a religious thing," he said. "I tasted a beer and tried a cigarette once, as a wayward teenager, and never did it again."  The Jacksonville event starts at 2 p.m..

City more than tripled Mayor Alvin Brown's pension plan contribution I found this quite interesting considering our police and firemen pay 7% as noted in the article.

Richard Clark has missed more than a third of all council meetings this year And as stated in the article, the title is somewhat misleading..."Jacksonville City Councilman Richard Clark has missed, was late to, or had to leave early from 18 city meetings since Jan. 1, records show". RYAN NICHOLS - Hardened Criminal?? Seriously??

If you're not already aware. This is what's going on in DC while dangerous criminals are allowed back out on the streets.  It's horrifying that this is happening to our citizens and veterans for protesting the hijacking of our election process. This is still happening! They are STILL being tortured and treated like full on terrorists.

You may not be aware of the typical things they're forced to go through...…
