TU: Toll road may be coming to First Coast; State wants to move forward with plans for proposed Outer Beltway

Worth keeping an eye on.  Does anyone have an opinion on this?  For or against?

A sign on Cecil Commerce Parkway north of Interstate 10 says "Future toll road."

The future may be arriving soon. And it would mean the first toll road in Northeast Florida in a generation.

Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll and state Transportation Secretary Ananth Prasad will be making an announcement today at Branan Field Road and OakLeaf Plantation in Clay County at 11 a.m.

Clay County Commissioner Doug Conkey and Jeff Sheffield, executive director of the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization, say they expect the state to announce it is moving forward with putting tolls on the proposed First Coast Outer Beltway, including the parkway and Branan Field Road.

"I don't know if that's what they're going to announce," Sheffield said. "But that's the most likely scenario."

The state has planned to toll the Outer Beltway for years but struggled to find a private partner to build the entire 46.5-mile road from Interstate 10 in Duval County to Interstate 95 in St. Johns County.

Actually, this sort of thing is done in China with great success.  I am sure this is meant to copy what they do.  Unfortunately, for a private company to do it, it must be a toll road to make it pay off and to make enough money to keep the road in good condition.

If a private company wants to build a road from I-10 south to I-95 go for it. But you would never be able to do it on tolls alone, never. This is the same argumetn against high speed rail, if it can't pay for itself then we don't need it. Private companies are welcome to start anytimethey want. Good Luck.

Theresa, I am not sure folks know when it's enough.  Perhaps the 2012 election will begin to put people in office who understand that our governments, on pretty much all levels, have all gone beyond enough!  And agree totally with you the idea that we would pay a gas tax and then, pay a fee per mile is a stretch and only another way to take more money out of the private sector to blow on give away programs and welfare and food stamps.  In fact, this reminds me that our city charter says out property taxes cover garbage pickup, but we are charged an additional fee for garbage pick up as well (double dipping for bucks)!

I am glad I know the way around it and I hope everyone else does too  We pay taxes we don't need to pay tolls too!   That's just as bad as making us pay taxes on gas then try to make us pay per mile.  When is it enough?

RYAN NICHOLS - Hardened Criminal?? Seriously??

If you're not already aware. This is what's going on in DC while dangerous criminals are allowed back out on the streets.  It's horrifying that this is happening to our citizens and veterans for protesting the hijacking of our election process. This is still happening! They are STILL being tortured and treated like full on terrorists.

You may not be aware of the typical things they're forced to go through...…
