Guys, is it possible to write laws such that nothing but embassies can have that type of status and no other entity can.  We could be really nice to them and say sorry, but this is retroactive to before you came here, and we will be happy to buy back the property from you and help you move where ever you plan to go???  It would be worth what had to be spent to get them the heck out of here and somewhere else where they won't put up with the garbage.

The UN is is recognized by its members as a sovereign state and the land it sits on a nation unto itself. As a result, Patricia, they're the only ones with a say so on who is allowed within their "borders."

On a few rare occasions though, the US has refused to issue a visa to a "dignitary" headed there preventing that person from landing at an area airport. I don't remember who or when but I do remember the international brouhaha it created.

Imminent Domain their sorry, hateful, politically septic, infectious, property.  Raze the building and rebuild a giant luxury apartment building for retired veterans.  They deserve it.  Subsidize it with tariffs and place Donald Trump as ops manager.  Do all this as a veteran Foundation and Grant; supported by tax deductable donations.  Purchase and give the land for a NEW UNITED NATIONS in Luanda, or Uganda, or Nigeiria.  Since the majority of members are Moslems, let them build in Mecca, Saudia Arabia and be subject to Sharia Law.  What a fitting, deserving. Place and position.  I doubt Don Trump would accept that assignment.  Perhaps Roslyn Carter would appreciate the honor.

Ya know Doyle, yes they are a guest even if the own the building.  We could have the actual organization to move, couldn't we.  They can use the building for anything they want, but we don't have to have the likes of Libyan dictators and Iranian dictators in our country do we?  I mean if some of these folks aren't allowed into the country, the UN being in NY might now seem so attractive!

The repair deal sounds just like something the federal government would do.  Money is water to them!

The UN owns the property its headquarters sits on. It was given to them by a Rockefeller foundation in the late 1940s when the newly-created organization needed a place to go.

Considering the hoopla a few years ago about its deteriorated condition and how much money (almost $1 billion as I recall) was needed for repair, I thought applyng the Kelo v New London decision made sense. Instead, the US loaned the UN the money. Making even less sense, the UN pays us back with money it charges the member states at the same percentage it demands in membership dues.

In other words, we're paying 22 percent of the money the UN is paying us back for the money we loaned them.

Larry, sorry, I used commissioned and he wasn't, he took a test which would have put him on the bottom rung and he decided he would rather be on the top rung as enlisted.  He was also one of the 3 people chosen for E-10 of Europe but when he went for the interview (because he knew the other 2 guys that were in the running), he said there was no chance because of his age (he was way younger than the other 2).  It was still an honor, and in their usual harsh way, they told him if he would stay in Europe, the sky was the limit but he wasn't pretty enough for Washington!  Ya gotta love the military!

cut me off.  Here is what I said after the cut off :)

He doesn't shutter any departments.  He only just cuts the waste and fraud and in some cases combines things with other departments when we need to SHUT THEM DOWN and do away with anything that is not specifically mentioned as a duty of the federal government in the constitution.  The states need to be restored to their rightful place in the mix as predominant parties who decide what the federal government does and not the other way around!

My husband also did 23 years in the Navy and although he attained commissioned status, he respectfully declined/resigned it when he found out he had made E9 a month later. Since he did not have enough time in the service when he took the test for E9, he didn't think he would get it, and was accepted in the last increment (which would give him the proper length of time to be able to accept the advancement), he chose to be at the top of the enlisted rank instead of accepting something that was not based on his knowledge and experience (and in fact is still working navigation systems on

submarines, in a different capacity which right now is testing systems, but at one point was part of a small group at the think tank where he worked that designed and installed the navigation systems on one class of submarines..........for which I was very proud of him. Donald was also a good fit for testing since he wrote the testing manuals for navigation systems in his last tour of duty, and they are still used.............needless to say, most of the time he doesn't have to look things up, because he KNOWS what the requirements are :). We also were stationed overseas.

 

I agree totally with you that we should disassociate ourselves with the UN and stop giving them any money (which should slow them down quite a bit). At one time, it might have been worth the involvement, but they now consist primarily of rogue dictators and other unscrupulous leaders of  countries who really can't stand us but are happy to have the US pay the lion's share of the expenses for these usurpers. I also think the UN should find another place for its headquarters, since they seem to have forgotten they are a guest in our country and have no real say on anything about how we run our country. Perhaps they could consider some middle eastern country as their next headquarters. I have no objection to cuts if it improves the overall defence department, but I disagree that national defense and social security (which is not an entitlement) should not be the first things on the chopping block when they certainly have much that needs to be eliminated and the size and scope of the federal government cut significantly. Laws must be put on the books that make it extremely clear exactly what the duties of the federal government are, as listed in the constitution, and what the commerce clause is intended to mean etc. If we can get things straight again and begin the process of getting our country back on some sort of solid footing and restore freedom as it was meant to be, we must put things in place that never allow another Obama to promise socialism and then, all but destroy our economy and fiscal condition to attain a goal that has only been destructive anywhere it has ever been tried. Like you, I don't think anything should be off the table, but I think there should be a pecking order, and national defense should not be the very first thing we look at given conditions in the world today.  I think when we get rid of Obama (and heaven help us if we don't or can't), we will see a resurgence in our economy the likes of nothing we have seen in a while.  When that happens, our financial condition could improve rapidly (and boy do we need to be sure they pay the debt down instead of doing what the republicans have a habit of doing when they get in charge and things get better do...........spend every dime........... managing what Obama (or the last wack job the democrats and other foolish people have voted in) has left behind instead of getting rid of it and all the radicals, socialists and communists installed in almost every government function).  The congress needs to restore their equal footing to the executive branch and the judicial branch as it was meant to be..............but it will take years I am pretty sure to undo the damage, so I am dreaming to a point!  I looked at what Coburn has put together and some of it is pretty good, but he doesn't shutt
