House Majority Leader Lopez-Cantera Calls on Bill Nelson to Apologize for Politicizing Capture of Osama Bin Laden

Tallahassee, Fla. - Florida House Majority Leader Carlos Lopez-Cantera (R-Miami) issued the following statement regarding a press conference held today by U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, hosted by Members of the House Democrat Caucus. During the press conference, Senator Nelson accused the Florida Legislature of trying to deny the right to vote to those soldiers who aided in the capture and killing of terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden.

"Senator Nelson's tactics amount to nothing more than an outrageous political stunt, motivated solely by his re-election campaign at the expense of our Armed Forces. His disgraceful suggestion that the Florida Legislature would attempt to diminish the voting rights of American heroes is offensive and untruthful, and I demand that Senator Nelson immediately apologize for politicizing what should be a moment of unity for our nation.

"As Americans, we should be celebrating the capture of Osama Bin Laden as a step forward in the war on terror, remembering the thousands of American citizens he killed and those who have lost their lives in the global war on terror. Instead, Senator Nelson is using this American victory as a campaign stunt, and that is deplorable.

"As a U.S. Senator, he should be focused on tackling our failed federal immigration policy, preserving the space coast economy, and pushing back against an administration that is threatening to raise taxes on job creators when Florida is experiencing record high unemployment."

The way I see it, Nelson is an evil fool.  Steve, I agree with you on one day voting, national holiday, but there are occupations in which people have to work, ie. hospitals, emergency services, and so on, so the polls should be open for 24 hours to accommodate them. Still, the handicapped and otherwise disabled should be allowed to vote absentee with documented certification of their illness or handicap. Disenfranchising any U.S. citizens is unconstitutional.

Calling Nelson a fool just gives him an excuse, we need to start calling evil by it's proper name when we see it.

early voting, lets make it convenient for the moochers to use the ballot box to loot the tax payers wallet. Bob Honiker you are correct sir

'Benedict' Bill also wants to abolish the Constitutionally established "Electorial College." A democracy is just rule by majority vote; not a representative republic. I don't know if he is planning a Constitutional Amendment or just plans to ignore it!  In my opinion, Nelson is a fool, and I believe that 'dementia' could be a real campaign issue next year.

The below is what I wrote in response to FL Sen. Bill Nelson's e-mail to me:

"Senator Nelson:

I have no intention of doing anything but actively support that bill and am praying that it passes. We don't need any more loosening of safeguards that help maintain and insure the integrity of the election process. Why in the world would you want to have loopholes and opportunities for manipulation and undermining of the voting process?

I believe voting should only be on one day, in person at the ballot box, unless a person can provide medical or handicap documentation to be able to vote absentee.

I also believe voting stations should be provided wherever our military troops are serving this country around the world and that the Democrat army of lawyers that go around challenging military votes and doing recounts after election where "lost" or "misplaced" votes are mysteriously found, should be banned from doing so.

Voting is a state or local citizen responsibility and they have options open to them for demanding and conducting a recount or an audit of the vote. We don't need outsiders and carpetbaggers trying to manipulate the outcome of our elections.

Your objectives here are not surprising, for they are right in line with the current Administration in Washington, D.C.

Sad but true

John,  when Nelson speaks of democracy he has in mind a very different sort of democracy from what the founders intended. Democrats now see our Constitution as a roadblock to their marxist goals. They don't yet have the courage to come right out and say it  but they would dump it entirely if they could.

This Nation was put into great danger when the Constitution was read to  support universal suffrage. We now have as many government dependents voting as we do voters contributing to their support. Politicians like Nelson get rich and powerful exploiting this corruption of our system.

It's been a long time since I recieved anything from Senator BN. He sent out an alert on early voting legislation and suggested that I contact Gov. Scott. So I did. I requested early voting to be banned... period. I don't believe that's what Nelson had in mind. When there is a half month of vote counting, it allows political strategist too much time to adjust.

It makes me nervous when Nelson uses the word democracy... It is almost universally felt that when we call a country democratic we are praising it; consequently, the defenders of every kind of regime claim that it is a democracy, and fear that they might have to stop using the word if it were tied down to any one meaning.

RYAN NICHOLS - Hardened Criminal?? Seriously??

If you're not already aware. This is what's going on in DC while dangerous criminals are allowed back out on the streets.  It's horrifying that this is happening to our citizens and veterans for protesting the hijacking of our election process. This is still happening! They are STILL being tortured and treated like full on terrorists.

You may not be aware of the typical things they're forced to go through...…
