TALLAHASSEE - The Senate passed the Legislature’s final version Thursday of the state’s redrawn political lines. Two lawsuits immediately followed, claiming lawmakers didn’t do what voters told them to.
Throughout the process of creating new state House, state Senate and congressional lines, legal challenges were expected, and the even without them courts must have the final say.
Complicating matters was the fact map-drawers had to toe a fine line between federal law protecting minorities and Amendments 5 and 6 passed in 2010 that required districts to be compact, and not to favor a political party.
